Refit

A refit is run by a plan, not by surprises.

A refit whose scope is not defined at the outset overruns on both time and budget.

How to Plan a Refit: Survey, Scope and Budget

A refit is not a single repair but a project in which several trades work at the same time. And a project needs a plan.

1. Condition survey

The boat is surveyed, a checklist is completed and a photographic condition report is drawn up. That report is the basis of the scope.

2. Scope and quotation

The work to be done, the materials to be used and the duration are all settled. The “let’s start and see” approach is the most expensive method there is.

The costliest thing

Work carried out without a survey. If it is not clear what will be done, it is not clear how long it will take either.

3. Work programme

  • The trades — paint, composite, engine, electronics, joinery — are sequenced.
  • The critical path is identified, and waiting times such as curing are built into the plan.
  • Interim checkpoints are defined.

4. Execution and reporting

Progress is reported as the work proceeds, and at handover every operation carried out, together with our recommendations, is presented in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a refit take?
It depends on the scope. In a properly planned refit the duration is defined at the start and then tracked.
Refit or repair?
If individual faults keep recurring and the systems are ageing, a refit works out cheaper.
How is the process tracked?
Through interim checkpoints and progress reports, with a full report presented at handover.
